Gizem Oktay is an interdisciplinary designer and writer based in Turkey. Her practice centers speculative design with multi-species anthropology and new materialist philosophy. She recently acquired her MA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Illustration.
During Master's study, she worked on media philosophy and beyond human cultures. She developed her final thesis with the prestigious Graduate Research Development Grant from MICA.
After finishing her MA, she returned to Turkey to continue her projects independently. She was recently selected as a virtual designer-in-residence for Istanbul Design Biennial’s “Designing Into the Future” program co-organized with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Netherlands. Currently, she is continuing to work on her research on liminality and its traces across multiple disciplines. This ongoing research takes different forms, including an essay published on the design blog of University of Pennsylvania.
